Innovation

VDCN Innovation & Test Lab.

VDCN is not just a billing pipe. It is an infrastructure platform that can support a new generation of mobility, safety and planning services, built on trusted vehicle data and strong governance.

Purpose

A safe space to experiment with trusted data.

The Innovation & Test Lab provides controlled environments where OEMs, data providers, public bodies, researchers and mobility companies can explore new ideas using canonical vehicle data – without risking production systems or privacy obligations.

Test & certification

A dedicated sandbox for testing integrations, tariff changes and new charging models before they affect live billing or policy.

Mobility & insurance innovation

With proper governance and consent, partners can explore usage-based insurance, fleet optimisation and safety analytics based on trusted VDCN data.

Academic & public-good projects

Universities and research bodies can access carefully governed datasets to study safety, emissions and infrastructure planning, supporting evidence-based policy.

Guardrails

Innovation with governance.

  • Clear separation between test and production environments.
  • Strong anonymisation or aggregation for research and planning uses.
  • Consent-based models where identifiable data is required.
  • Technical and legal guardrails to prevent data misuse.

The aim is to unlock the value of vehicle data for public good – safer roads, smarter planning, cleaner air – while preserving trust. Innovation programmes are designed in partnership with regulators and stakeholders from the outset.

Partnerships

Working with partners across the ecosystem.

Public bodies

Joint pilots with departments, devolved governments and city regions to explore new charging models, safety schemes and planning tools.

Industry & mobility providers

Collaborations with OEMs, telematics providers and mobility companies to design interoperable services that build on a single, trusted data backbone.

Academia & research

Partnerships with universities and research institutes to answer key questions about transport demand, safety and decarbonisation using real-world evidence.

To discuss potential innovation projects or pilots, please contact the VDCN team. We are particularly interested in programmes that demonstrate how a shared national vehicle data backbone can reduce cost, improve safety and support net-zero transport goals.
